| What is the big deal with that? Why can some people not watch YouTube videos at work? I understand that you are not supposed to surf the web at work but that is everyones own decision. I mean is there any kind of technical restriction? Aren't you allowed to install flash? | |

I heard you can..there's sites where you can watch youtube over them...something to do with ...proxies...or so... I have no idea how it works, but I heard it does. Probably a non-blocked site that is used as an agent to show you youtube pages...please, someone save me who knows about teh interwebz

| well internet blocking at work sucks balls..but I wouldn't try to get around such blocks unless I wanted to get fired...so if you like your job, don't go around the blockers...that's B's advice | |

Yup, that really is the point here! Of course there are options to get around blocking, like the use of proxies or stuff like that but I believe it would be kinda hard to explain that to your boss … (I thought you just weren't allowed to install flash, which is quite a different story)

| companies have good reasons to block...I probably would if I had a company
1 - too much time is spent on the internet, it is abused and work doesn't get done 2 - possibility of viruses 3 - porn...which could lead to viruses and sexual harassment issues 4 - there are all kinds of videos and pictures on the internet that can easily insult co-workers

| I manage Internet use for our organization. We treat our employees like adults. If they don't get their job done, it is up to their manager to deal with. If they start getting spyware, we give them a warning. if it happens a second time, we adjust their security settings.
My attitude is that I want them to not feel like I am big brother and I feel that in the age of the information worker who is on the computer pretty much all day, they should be able to have a little break from the work.

I think that is great attitude! It is a curse of the digital communication age that everyone can be monitored all the time, it's not only bad for the individual but also for the company the person works for. It destroys real social behaviour. If you treat employers like children they will behave like children (actually children shouldn't be treated that way though). I say give them some freedom, give them some sphere of influence. It's better for each individual empolyer and even for the whole company on a long term basis.
